Vendor Spotlight: A moment with Anubis Gear
I had the absolute pleasure of speaking with such a prominent and very popular vendor in the kink community. His creations are one-of-a-kind original pieces, very appealing to the eye, and create an amazing experience for like-minded kink individuals. This vendor always seeks out something new. What I love about him is if he doesn’t know a particular area or item, he always goes the extra mile to educate himself about it. He is customer-driven and loves to create items that the customer wants and desires. I thoroughly enjoyed this interview. So, without further ado, this month’s vendor spotlight is Anubis Gear!
What is Anubis Gear and who owns it?
Anubis Gear is a minority-owned business that was created and is operated by Cameron D. Cameron the sole producer of Anubis Gear. Anubis Gear has a conglomerate of items for every kink’s desire. Anubis Gear sells rope and leather-based harnesses and suspenders, accessories (wristbands, armbands, collars, leashes, etc.), impact play items (canes, floggers, paddles, thumpers, etc.), hanks of rope, and even tag engraving (pet, rivet tags, dog tag, & luggage tags). Anubis Gear not only sells these types of unique items, but also provides several services such as custom fitting and adjustments, custom orders with paid consultation (fee credited to order if the purchase is made within 30 days of consult) rush orders, and minor onsite repairs (rivet, snap, eyelet replacement).
How did Anubis Gear get started?
The founder and owner, Cameron D., came up with the idea and concept of Anubis Gear. He is a jack of all trades. Cameron has been involved in the kink community since the late 2000s. At that time, he knew nothing about leather. He began to go to the MAL event in Washington, D.C. (starting in 2008), and would often buy leather harnesses from the event vendors. Cameron had some new ideas for leather harness designs that he wanted, so he began to venture out to different vendors to achieve those designs to wear them to the event. He had gone to 3 different vendors in 2014, but no one could make the designs that he envisioned. So, Cameron took matters into his own hands. If you want it done right, why not do it yourself? And that is just what he did.
In December 2014, Cameron created 2 pairs of suspenders, a rope harness, and another piece for the 2015 MAL event. Though Cameron took a risk in producing these items, he received positive feedback from the members at the MAL event. There were so many responses that Cameron decided to take it a step further. He decided to continue creating rope harnesses, as well as applying as a vendor for the 2016 MAL, BBM, and CLAW events. The harnesses that Cameron made were made out of rope, but he realized that leather was selling much quicker in the community. Cameron still did not have enough knowledge of leather, so he began to do a lot of research to see how leather is constructed. He wanted to find different ways to make harnesses, (like in leather), not just in rope. Though some of his customers were still interested in his rope harnesses, leather harnesses were a new venture for him. So, Cameron began to expand his business with new leather harnesses, as well as introducing impact play items.
Cameron D., (who has been a vendor since 2015), has seen tremendous growth in his business, Anubis Gear. Cameron has not only expanded his customized items but has also improved his look while vending at the conferences. Cameron applied at many conferences to continue to display his creative and unique designs. He started vending at MsC in 2018, as well as continued vending at MAL, BBM, and CLAW. Anubis Gear has also expanded to events such as LF&P.
Cameron always listens to his customers’ needs and focuses on selling diversity. He continues to grow his business, providing a range of products that his customers could wear, as well as items that they could enjoy great kink play. Cameron usually starts his play items in black. If these items interest his customers, he will customize them in multiple colors. Cameron tends to make a handful of limited-designed items at a time and may not release them again until the following year. So, when you see something you like, purchase it!
Cameron is hands-on with his customers, encouraging them on how to use the products they purchase from him. Cameron “keeps it real with his customers”, and even has volunteers to assist him when vending at conferences and events. He continuously listens to his customers and provides reasonable pricing for his products based on the material and time invested in creating that certain item. Cameron was his boss and enjoyed the freedom of having his own successful small business.
