Wellness and Selfcare: Go to bed!

Why is sleep so important?

There are so many essential benefits to getting a good night’s sleep.  My parents would always tell me to go to sleep so that I would feel better in the morning.  And they were right.  Sleep is a condition in which the eyes are closed, and the body and mind become relaxed, causing the activity of the brain to be altered, and the consciousness of the surroundings to be suspended. This type of event occurs daily for individuals, sometimes several times a day, depending on the need for rest.  Sleep ultimately is essential for one’s overall health and recharging and rejuvenating one’s mind, body, and soul.

How many hours of sleep are needed?

As an adult, it is recommended that we get at least 7-8 hours of sleep each night to be fully rested for the next day.  This is not always possible, depending on how busy and jam-packed your day may become.  For me, I have a very hectic schedule and try to do many things within one day.  Sometimes I can, other days, not so much.  It just isn’t enough hours in the day.  So, I must make myself stop for the day to ensure that I wind down and recharge my body, to prepare for the next day.  Sleep is very important and must not be taken lightly.  If not enough sleep is taken, many health issues can affect the body in the near future.

What happens if we do not get enough sleep?

If we do not get enough sleep, the body reacts in various ways. One major condition that may occur because of lack of sleep is sleep deprivation.  Sleep deprivation is a “condition that occurs due to inadequate or insufficient sleep sustained over a period. This occurs when an individual constantly fails to obtain the amount of sleep that they need”.  Sleep deprivation is widespread all over the world.  One way to help reduce sleep deprivation is taking naps throughout the day, even if it is only for 30 minutes.

Many conditions and disorders may cause sleep deprivation.  Some include:

  • Sleep apnea
  • Insomnia
  • Restless leg syndrome
  • Bruxism
  • Chronic pain

Other conditions that can influence sleep deprivation relate to:

  • Chronic pain
  • Mental health
  • Diabetes
  • Substance abuse

If these conditions and disorders are not properly managed, the body can be heavily impacted.  The immune system can be compromised, as well as blood pressure, sugar levels, and heart function can fluctuate drastically.  Not getting enough sleep daily can even eventually affect the brain and how we think and process information.  These types of effects will continue to decline one’s health and make it difficult to enjoy life fully.

What can we do to get more sleep?

There are several ways to get more sleep and to do it consistently.  Some methods include:

  • Shutting down all electronic devices by a certain timeframe (ex. 9 pm, no phones or TV).
  • Use meditation and soothing music to relax and ease into sleep mode.
  • Intake of natural medicines such as melatonin or drinking chamomile tea.  Also, try taking magnesium tablets.
  • Consult a doctor.  Further testing may have to be done (such as taking a sleep test overnight) to ensure that you are breathing correctly and are sleeping throughout the night.

Remember:  Keep living your best life…but please go to bed!!!!!
